A Combination Man/Rough & Tumbler Challenge by Mark Hatmaker


THE WAKE-UP CALL: The MICHIGAN ASSASSIN HALF-MILE

·         Grab a slam-ball [I used a 50#er].

·         Throw that mutha as far as you can.

·         Trot after it, rinse, wash and repeat for 1/2 mile.

·         Think fearless Stanley Ketchel thoughts while doing so.



BOXING

·         2 3-Minute Rounds head-on-the-bag digging body shots like there is no tomorrow.

·         Each time you flag or take a step back, ask yourself, “Is that what the Michigan Assassin would do?”

·         Put your head down and go back to work.



MATWORK

·          2 3-Minute Rounds Drop-Double-Leg Tackle Right & Left.


·         After each drop, saddle up, hit your spurs and GRIND the flesh off that throwing dummy or unfortunate soul you call your training partner, your friend.


ROUGH ‘N’ TUMBLE

·         1 3-Minute Rounds of adding the “bite” to your Boxing homework.

·         1 3-Minute Round of adding the “bite” to your Matwork homework.


SKILL EXTRA CREDIT

·         100 Dry-fire Draws your weapon of choice. Firearm, tactical folder, Bowie knife, tomahawk. [I used a six-gun.]

·         Extra Credit: Make each draw preceded by a high tuck jump so that you find smoothness post ballistic movement.



AWARENESS EXTRA CREDIT

  • All this week look everyone in the eye and make it a goal to shake the hand and learn the names of at least 5 strangers.
  • At worst, we learn to look at and actually see everyone, even folks that are usually off your radar.
  • At best, we may find a new friend.
  • Deduct a half-point if you skip the handshake. The human animal responds positively to touches. The handshake is socially acceptable and allows us to learn to be proactive with “de-escalation” practice.



READING HOMEWORK



·         Choose one book from the National Geographic’s 100 Greatest Adventure Books list that you have not read and polish it off before the month is out.

Indigenous Jeet Kune Do by Mark Hatmaker

  Likely we are all familiar with the following Bruce Lee quote…  " Research your own experience; absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is essentially your own." It is a foundational bit of wisdom found in Mr. Lee’s posthumously published collection of combat notes titled Tao of Jeet Kune Do . It is a more straightforward transliteration of teachings phrased more ambiguously in the Tao Te Ching , attributed to Lao zi. For my taste, I prefer Mr. Lee’s iteration to the Tao Te Ching .   Mr. Muldoon Roadwork. That word, to the combat athlete, conjures images of pre-dawn runs, breath fogging the morning air and, to many, a drudgery that must be endured.
