The Disutility of Push-Ups by Mark Hatmaker

I have not done a standard push-up since the age of 55 --58 at the  moment.  Let me ask you a couple of questions. Question 1 : Do you do push-ups as part of your combat conditioning/fitness regimen? Question 2 : Do you consider yourself, at least, an intermediate athlete, that is, of average fitness level or above? If you answered “Yes” to both, well, you just may be wasting your time; in the worst case, if your goal is improvement, you are stealing time/energy expenditure from superior tools. The push-up [Floor Dip to Old Schoolers] was originally used as an introductory exercise for the untrained and then abandoned once the athlete graduated from sedentary rookie status. Unconvinced? Let’s look at it another way. I currently weigh 170 pounds. If I were to say to you… “ Guess what? I can bench press 110 pounds!” You may think that is an odd lowball brag and question my presumed bonafides as a guy who works out now and then. The kinda/sorta standa...

Warrior Walking: A Northern Blackfeet Lesson by Mark Hatmaker

Indigenous tribes of the early Americas were noted for covering tremendous distances in dense Eastern woodland, stark Plains, and the treacherous desert and mountain territories of the Southwest. Yes, many horse-culture tribes covered these vast territorial empires on horseback, but pre and post-horse many were doing the same vast ranging by dint of foot travel alone. These “terrain-eaters” or “earth-walkers” were not confined to some cardio-blessed cadre within each tribe; we see these feats of distance and fleet-of-foot speed demonstrated across the board in man, woman, and child. General Crook during his pursuit of the Apache in America’s Southwest would remark that entire villages would be up and long gone from last-known scout-reported locations in a mere 24-hours. That is, man, woman, and child—young and old—packed camp and were gone by the time the soldiers arrived. An entire village could be 70 miles away by the next day and this is all under load. Remarkable....

What Do Men Dig About Women: Sex Appeal & Combat Conditioning, Part 2 by Mark Hatmaker

[See What Do Women Really Want?: Combat Conditioning Intel, Part 1 for the female view of the story. Here, well, Ladies, let’s see what catches the male eye---you may be surprised in some cases.] There is zero disparity in the sexes when it comes to enjoying eye-appeal but…there is a marked difference in aspects/attributes that “make the grade” for each sex. That is, what might be high on the list for Gents, might be mighty low on the list for Ladies and vice versa. An understanding of these differences can lead to better understanding, better profile pics on dating apps, perhaps targeted motivation in the conditioning department to attract or retain love. At the very least, it can go a long way to correct gross misunderstandings based on assumptions. Example : The female of the species enjoys a manicure and perhaps “ having the nails done ” to spruce up for a night out. Yahoo Finance states that the average woman spends $16 per month on nail care. This is curious ...
