An Old-School Ass-Whuppin’ Self-Quarantined Roundelay for My Rough ‘n’ Tumblers by Mark Hatmaker

[All based on RAWs 210 & 209.] All are 3-Minute Rounds w/ 30-seconds Rest Round One -Cross. Keep it live, move. Put some stink on it, test that bag’s warranty. Round Two -With partner or without, toss that cross and envision a counter liver-hook or head-hunt on the high-line, so cross and roll with a bread-basket cover, keep those shoulders high—no sure things in the world. Round Three- Cross, Roll, toss another Cross out of the Roll Round Four -Add a rear bark as the cherry on top. Play this one on the drag bag as the true bark is unforgiving to tibias the world over. Rest 1 Minute Round One -On your feet slap and catch and drag to an outside two-on-one. Work both sides like a good wrassler. Head in the pocket, Crew, or I will tsk-tsk you to kingdom come. Round Two -Off of a resisted two-on-one slide as smooth as a viper into an Underhook ride. Again, where is that head supposed to be? That’s right. Round Three -Once you’ve got that ...

The Never-Take-A-Step Combat Warm-Up by Mark Hatmaker

First, that title is a lie, there will be exactly two-steps taken. After that, any and all steps taken in addition is a signpost where your body broke and what you want to work on. This is a three-exercise warm-up that will wake-up all those lovely major muscle groups, provide some active stretching, wake-up that spine, and tell your heart and lungs it’s “Go time!” When done to protocol and speed it is a sub-5-minute warm-up.  Keeping it under 5-minutes [or as close to 5 as you can manage] allows you more time to work on the heavy-hitters of strength and tactical cultivation. The good news about the Never-Stake-a-Step Regimen is that it serves as a nice just below the redline cardio burner and is enough of a muscle pusher that those into somatotropics should find it a utilitarian muscle-builder. Note: This is not meant as a cardio-replacer in and of itself but…if you hit this Sub-5 with good protocol 3-days per week and use Blitz Drills on altern...

How to Train Historical Mayhem by Mark Hatmaker

[From the introduction to Boxing Like the Champs, Round Two , but this applies to all the historical wok we do around here. From boxing, to old school wrestling, to rough ‘n’ tumble we must dig hard to find the real gold.  The book will be released in the Fall of this year. See our other products for more of this approach to training.] You’ve likely heard this quote before…   “ Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it .” It was uttered by the Spanish philosopher George Santayana. In context, he issued it as a warning to those who seek solutions on the world stage, urging them to have a bit of long-view perspective before they plunge on merrily and or madly with this or that “save the world” scheme. In that context, Mr. Santayana was likely sage. But…on this smaller stage of a canvas covered ring, bordered by ropes and turnbuckles it is a bit of untruth. Oh, but only if it were true for we lovers of fistic mayhem. ...

THE ROCK’S TRAILING FOREARM by Mark Hatmaker

[Excerpted from our book Boxing Like the Champs, Round Two , to be released Fall of 2020.] Rocco Francis Marchegiano. Rocky Marciano The Brockton Blockbuster. Yeah, yeah, we all know, the only undefeated heavyweight champion.  Retires with a perfect record. A strong, powerful fighter with a big heart, tremendous work ethic and a good character to boot. Usually we start all of these mini-lessons with a reminder to the cognoscenti or an introduction to those new on the path.  Rocky Marciano is one of those rare few who seems to need little of that “ Gather around, let me tell you about …” noise. So, in this case, let’s not talk about what he did well, but something that he did poorly. And….how that poorly done thing often made him perform so well. Contradictions abound there, huh? The legend, while graceful in character, has never been accused of grace in movement. He was an awkward lunging fighter. Some labeled...

Around the Corner by Mark Hatmaker

In four weeks we do the photo-shoot for the long-promised volume Boxing Like the Champs, Round Two . Consumers of the 1 st book and the companion DVD-set Boxing like the Champs can expect more deeply researched fistic malice. [All available at our little ol’ website store.] The publisher tells me it will see wide release this Fall. Coming Up Sooner in the Pipeline: The Suakhet’u. First, what The Suakhet’u is not… ·         It is non martial arts or combat sports related. ·         It is not a strenuous physical endeavor. What is The Suakhet’u? ·         It is an audio-visual course detailing a morning enlivening/awakening practice culled from various American Indigenous traditions. ·         Although there is some “sitting” involved, it is not meditation. ·         Altho...
