Roman Legionnaires, The Red Shirt “FU,” Hardened Pugilists, & “Rough Ways” by Mark Hatmaker

Let’s see if we can learn a lesson about toughening up in our own regimens, in our own quarantines, hell, maybe just in day-to-day living in our often nothing more “jarring” than “ Keith, doesn’t share my opinion. Me sad.” Our lesson is essentially, “ Go harder, go heavier ” in the day-to-day than is expected or asked so that you may laugh at any obstacle that the opposition or life has to offer. The Legionnaire Example Flavius Vegetius Renatus offers the following advice for the training of the formidable Roman Legionnaire. “ We are informed by the writings of the ancients that, among other exercises was that of the post. They gave the recruits round bucklers woven with willows, twice as heavy as those used on real service, and wooden swords double the weight of the common ones. They exercised them with these at the post both morning and afternoon …”— Military Institutions of the Romans, [ AD 378] [My Rough ‘n’ Tumblers this very “extra” weight tactic is what is used in Th

The Rough and Tumble Raconteur Podcast by Mark Hatmaker

What follows is a wee bit about this particular iron in the fire. A little what it is…. A little what to expect… Perhaps a nugget or two to allow you to decide, “ Yeah, this might be my cuppa ” or, “ Nah, I’ll move on in the aural wilderness .” What the podcast is, in short, is a grab bag of Old School Western Martial Arts, Resurrected Indigenous Ways, and & Empirical Musings tinged with a heavy dose of respect, admiration and the occasional shined spotlight on Bad Hombres and Honorable Hosses of yore. I wager we all have friends; we can gather with them and BS ourselves and have more fun. Hell, I’d rathe

The “Naked” Shield: Lessons in Awareness for Warriors by Mark Hatmaker

Pop Quiz One- How aware are you of your surroundings on a scale from 1-10? [10 being very aware.] Two -Do you consider yourself alive to the subtle changes in your environment? [Again, rank this personal assessment on the 1-10 scale.] Let us do a little anthropological delving, we’ll get to The “Naked” Shield in a moment. The Arctic It has been noted that among the various Polar tribes [the Inuit being just one of these] a keen sense of direction is valued as much as the latest iPhone is to us. In an often snow-covered featureless terrain, one often blanketed by thick fog any and all grasp of how to “see” the world is of utmost importance. Whenever a person left the confines of shelter to urinate [male or female] they would watch their urine stream. They would note any pulling of the urine arc by the wind, failing a strong enough wind to alter fluid flow dynamics, they would observe the steam from the stream. Does it rise? Does it flutter and dissipate in a particular
