Knockout Punching 1: The Biomechanics Active Lecture An Upper Battalion Lesson by Mark Hatmaker

Two Men in the Know on Educated Knockout Punching

There are born sluggers and made sluggers. Born sluggers age out, made sluggers improve like a good whiskey.”—Hype Igoe, circa, 1924

There is no such thing as a natural puncher. There is a natural aptitude for punching and that is different. Nobody's born the best. You have to practice and train to become the best.”—Cus D’Amato

The Primacy of KO Punching Power/Education

A good fighter requires all of the additional technical attributes:

·        Good Blocks

·        Good Evasion

·        Good Footwork

But…You Cannot Win a Match, Bout, Street-Fight Without a Strong Punch.

EVERY Rough n Tumbler wants to hit as hard as possible.

Is the KO Necessary?

No, but…

Strong punching ability also Suppresses an Opponent.

·        Reduces his activity, acting as a large part of your defensive strategy. The less they act the more opportunity in your court.

So, don’t sweat if your power isn’t THE best, you are striving to make YOUR Power YOUR BEST.

I already throw hands, have for years; is this information gonna be too basic for me?

Absolutely not.

The job here is not to revisit fundamentals but in Plato’s use of the word, periagoge in regard to education.

Periagoge loosely means “To turn around.”

Periagoge in regard to Knockout Punching is less about adding new knowledge to what you do now, as it means to turn around and reevaluate your entire schema.

Power Punching Biomechanics

Center of Mass [COM]

·        Center of Gravity/Center of Mass, Axis of Control

·        Call it what you will—punching is a game of finesse that is always conscious of COM.

Support

·        Power is also dependent on the strength of the power delivery system.

·        Your weapons [punching arms] are chained to your torso [COM] which rest atop your legs.

·        Strong punching needs strong legs educated to explosive strength.

·        [See The Unleaded Conditioning Program for MUCH on this topic.]

Stability Zone

·        Your Support is NOTHING without an understanding of the space between the two powerful legs. [More on this in a moment.]

Projection

·        Your Stability Zone changes with EVERY step, every shift, juke, & jive of the upper body.

·        Your Stability Zone and understanding of Projection go fist in glove.

That’s enough of the freebie taste.

This first volume is Primarily Active Lecture to lay all of the required groundwork for all that follows.

DO NOT READ THAT AS UNIMPORTANT.

This info if key, vital to building that KO.

Big News: Rough n Tumble: The Whole She-Bang aka “The System”

Lookin’ for the A-Z, step-by-step 1-2-3 to infinity authentic “Here’s how it was done” but…but, wished it were all synthesized into a single coherent “Start Here, Insert Tab A Into Slot B” curriculum?

One that addresses what the Old Timers called The Upper, Lower and Mixed Battalions?

One that laid it all on the table and then provided a “If the opponent does this, well, here are the responses” in a Convenient Strategic Flowchart?

A System that has a Start and a Visible Goal on the Horizon.

One that has Progress Benchmarks to chart the way?

Well, if that speaks to your combative soul, got big things coming your way…

Been working on this for a Loooooooooooooong Time.

More details later.

In the meantime, let’s allow this drop of wisdom from neo-Thomist philosopher, A.G. Sertillanges to tell us how to approach the Wisdom of the Elders.

Let us not be like those people who always seem to be pallbearers at the funeral of the dead. Let us utilize, by living, the qualities of the dead. Truth is ever new.”—The Intellectual Life [1920]

Apache Running by Mark Hatmaker

Of the many Native American tribes of the southwest United States and Mexico the various bands of Apache carry a reputation for fierceness, resourcefulness, and an almost superhuman stamina. The name “Apache” is perhaps a misnomer as it refers to several different tribes that are loosely and collectively referred to as Apache, which is actually a variant of a Zuni word Apachu that this pueblo tribe applied to the collective bands. Apachu in Zuni translates roughly to “enemy” which is a telling detail that shines a light on the warrior nature of these collective tribes.             Among the various Apache tribes you will find the Kiowa, Mescalero, Jicarilla, Chiricahua (or “Cherry-Cows” as early Texas settlers called them), and the Lipan. These bands sustained themselves by conducting raids on the various settled pueblo tribes, Mexican villages, and the encroaching American settlers. These American settlers were often immig...

The Original Roadwork by Mark Hatmaker

Mr. Muldoon Roadwork. That word, to the combat athlete, conjures images of pre-dawn runs, breath fogging the morning air and, to many, a drudgery that must be endured. Boxers, wrestlers, kickboxers the world over use roadwork as a wind builder, a leg conditioner, and a grit tester. The great Joe Frazier observed… “ You can map out a fight plan or a life plan, but when the action starts, it may not go the way you planned, and you're down to the reflexes you developed in training. That's where roadwork shows - the training you did in the dark of the mornin' will show when you're under the bright lights .” Roadwork has been used as a tool since man began pitting himself against others of his species in organized combat. But…today’s question . Has it always been the sweat-soaked old school gray sweat suit pounding out miles on dark roads or, was it something subtler, and, remarkably slower? And if it was, why did we transition to what, and I repeat myself,...

Keating has operated the training hall since 1972 when he first began teaching publicly. James Keating has trained in various combative systems since age 10. Just shy of being sixty years of hard work in the martial arts and tactical fields. His 2018 season of training seminars looks as strong as one of his hand made Bowie knives. His beliefs are as follows: " We advance together into the unknown future with the strength of our abilities sustaining us through thick and thin. Skill banishes fear. Skill is the secret, ...
