Beat the PT Odds: 61%, Parts 1 & 2 by Mark Hatmaker

 


If you make a decision to skip a training session this evening, be that walking, MMA, CrossFit, yoga, your flavor of choice—if you decide to skip this session, thinking, “No worries, I’ll get right back on the horse and be fine.”

 

Well, the odds are against you—an expansive exercise science study conducted in the UK found that a decision to skip a training session Today did not mean that the odds you would be consistent the next time went to 50/50—rather there is a 61% chance you will skip another session within 7 days.

 

You walk into a casino with better odds.

 

Each decision to skip puts more odds against your good intentions—the bookmaker ledger never re-sets to 50/50.

 

If you choose not to skip, you better your odds of continuing your momentum.

You chisel away at that 61% against.

 

I repeat, no matter how much we think, “Well, this time is fine, watch me go the rest of the week!”

The data does not support the fictional hard-charger we talk to in our heads.

 

The remedy? Do It.

 

The Research does state the most common reason for skipping? Time.

 

Unleaded Conditioning, get in and get ‘er done in a minimum of 25 minutes.

Beat the Odds: 61% Part 2

 

[In answer to good-faith questions of, “What about overtraining or injury?”]

 

ONE--All “Advice” is offered in light of statistical likelihood—I’m the Pit Boss in the casino readin’ the Hoyle to the players, it’s always up to the player to bet chips or cash in and skip. I am the dad to one person on this planet and I don’t even tell her what to do—she’s squared away and don’t need it.

 

TWO—Regarding “overtraining,” we’ve all been there at least once in younger enthusiastic days. The advice regards WISE training that is scalable to athlete and current circumstances of the athlete. Wise training is also comprised of peaks and valleys—call it wave, periodization, or whatever juju word ya dig, it all amounts to the same thing—not all things must be red-lined at all times.

 

As a matter of fact, that is to the detriment of development.

 

Consider this, any training that incapacitates the athlete/operator is not wise training. Training is a prep, a support to life.

 

Any training that interferes with the daily is not training, it is a stumbling block.

 

If one is so blasted the yardwork with the Missus has to wait, or that walk in the park with the kids is a slog, well…Wise Training is to make such “tasks” a piece of cake and welcome.

 

If I were a Spec Op Warrior who hit the Grinder hard that morning and then were told at noon, “Let’s Move we’re Operational!”

 

I can’t reply, “I’m wrecked Gunny, gotta drink my whey protein and I’ll hit the next one.”

 

Wise training always aids, abets, and supports Never interferes.

THREE—Regarding injuries.

 

My 88-year-old grandmother was out of bed within 24-hours of a total hip-replacement to put her re-hab steps in.

 

My wife had major brain/skull surgery—on the neuro-ward I saw nothing but post-op Heroes in dire circumstances getting’ it and hittin’ it the day after the knife.

 

This holds for all major surgeries now.

 

Hell, go to your local VA and watch PT.

 

Go to a coronary ward and observe post chest-crackin’ surgery.

 

All are back on it asap.

 

The sooner the return, the better.

 

Physical Therapy ain’t nothing but a fancy word for, “So you’re injured, here’s how we can still do stuff while that persists and help speed up healin’ to boot.”

 

Bust a hand boxing? Sprain an ankle in a toehold? Work the other limb in isolation.

 

Unilateral Exercise fires Cross-Education in the good paw to trigger and foster support in the injured paw.

 

Training is scalable to the athlete, to the circumstances, to the training session itself.

 

Zero does not scale—it is always zero.

 

And…

 

It is always your choice.

Should you always fight back? Yes. “ But what if …”           Over the course of many years teaching survival-based strategies and tactics the above-exchange has taken place more than a few times. The “ but what if …” question is usually posed by well-meaning individuals who haven’t quite grasped the seriousness of physical violence. American Indians, scouts, and indigenous trackers the world over have been observed to survey terrain/territory in the following manner. A scan of the sky overhead, then towards the horizon, and then finally moving slowly towards the ground. The reason being that outdoors, what is overhead-the clouds, flying birds, monkeys in trees, the perched jaguar—these overhead conditions change more rapidly than what is at ground level. It has been observed by sociologists that Western man whether on a hike outdoors or in an urban environment seldom looks up from the ground or above eye-level.
